Cucumber - Armenian Pale Green

These will cross pollinate with melons

Armenian Pale - Commonly known as a cucumber, it is actually a melon! This is a thin skinned fruit that is crunchy, burpless and never bitter. It makes a great pickle. If you want straight cucumbers, be sure to trellis them, otherwise they will curl. The vines are very productive too. They do best in well drained soil and while they prefer full sun, some shade in the late afternoon won’t hurt the growth. Pick them when they reach 12 to 18 inches long for peak flavor.

Planting Tips - Starting indoors should begin 2 to 3 weeks before the last average frost. Use peat pots to avoid disturbing the roots. Outdoor planting should be done 1 to 2 weeks after the last average frost. They can be planted in hills or rows. These plants can also be grown in containers at least 16 inches in diameter. Remember that growing them on a trellis will encourage straight cucumbers, and growing on the ground will create curled cucumbers.

Saving Seeds: If you save these seeds, know that they can cross pollinate with melons. Allow cucumbers to mature on the vine if possible. When the skin yellows, and begins to soften, it’s harvest time. Slice them in half, scoop out the seeds, place them in a strainer and rinse the seeds with clean water to remove pulp. Once clean, allow them to dry flat on paper towels, newspaper, or a screen.Store dry seeds in an envelope in a cool, dry location for up to 5 years.
